Joel swore he would never make the mistake with his kids his father made with him. He was true to his word, only Joel made a whole heap of new ones. The divorce had been spiteful and it affected the boys. His eldest son Hugh moved in after leaving school and youngest Seymour resented it. He believed his father favoured Hugh but it was really a case on not wanting to interrupt Seymour's education. Joel should have realised from his own experiences it would be counter-productive.Seymour became unmanageable and it was deemed better for him to live with Joel. Joel's work wasn't confined to any particular location and he chose an area where the rents were extremely low. It didn't occur to Joel to look at the area first and he bought a property over the phone. He found himself in a world of violence, drugs, and prostitution. Feral gangs roamed the streets looking for trouble.
Joel could have moved but was never one for shying away from trouble. Would his attitude put his own family at risk though, and what of those living in fear who had no way out. Could one person make a difference, and was Joel strong enough to be such a one?
